However, very few such manipulations have been conducted. A significant reason for this is that behavior and neurology are challenging to measure separately. “You can’t manipulate psychology independently of neural activity,” said senior author David Anderson, a neuroscientist at Caltech. “To do that, you need to be able to target specific types of cells in the brain with light while simultaneously measuring behavior related to the psychological process you are interested in. To do this, researchers have previously relied on traditional invasive techniques that cause damage to the brain or rely on more indirect measures of behavior that are very difficult to interpret.
